Career Technology

What Is Career Technology?

Career Technology is a broader term for what is typically known as “shop class.” At Stone Mountain School for boys with ADHD and learning differences, students learn a wide variety of skills, including:

  • Woodworking
  • Carpentry
  • Welding
  • Blacksmithing
  • Landscaping

This course is based on an industry-leading curriculum established by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), a nonprofit education foundation. Students learn basic skills that can be useful both personally and professionally.

Making Their Mark

A favorite among our students, Career Technology allows boys with ADHD and learning differences to engage in truly hands-on projects that produce immediate results. Using a lathe, scroll saw, table saw and other equipment, students have completed the following projects:

  • Building and repairing shelves, desks and stairs in classrooms
  • Making spoons and other items using a “green” Appalachian wood-working technique
  • Maintaining trails and flower beds around campus
  • Building cabinets for student cabins
  • Metal sculptures

Even if they’ve struggled in school in the past, students are able to build on small successes in the Career Technology classroom, and create something that is useful to themselves, their peers and even future generations of Stone Mountain School students.
